How to read a medical quote before you pay

The line items clinics often leave out until the final bill, and the questions that make two quotes comparable.

Two clinics can quote very different prices for the same procedure because they are not quoting the same thing. Before you compare, make sure each quote answers the same questions.

Ask what the price includes

  • Consultation and tests before treatment. Scans, blood tests and specialist reviews are often billed separately.
  • Theatre, anaesthesia and the hospital stay. For surgery these can cost as much as the surgeon's fee.
  • Materials and implants. Ask for the brand and type, not just "implant" or "crown".
  • Medication. Especially for IVF, where drugs can be a large share of the cost.
  • Follow-up visits. How many are included, and what each extra one costs.

Ask what happens if things change

Ask what you will pay if you need an extra night, a repeat test or a second procedure. A clinic that answers clearly in writing is usually easier to deal with later.

Get it in writing

Ask for an itemised quote on the clinic's letterhead or by email, with the date and how long the price is valid. Keep it until treatment is finished.

Check the clinic

Confirm that the doctor and the facility are registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC). You can search the council's online registers.
