About children's heart surgery abroad
Children born with heart defects, such as a hole in the heart or transposition of the great arteries (corrected by an arterial switch operation), are often referred abroad to specialist children's heart centres. A parent travels with the child, and hospitals plan the operation from the child's echocardiogram.

Common questions
Can a parent stay with the child?
Yes. Children's heart centres expect a parent to stay. Ask whether a parent can sleep in the ward and what accommodation costs nearby.
What should I send for a quote?
The child's latest echocardiogram report, the doctor's diagnosis, the child's age and weight, and any previous operations.
Will my child need more operations?
Some heart conditions are repaired in stages. Ask the surgeon whether more operations may be needed later and plan follow-up with a children's heart specialist in Kenya.
