About dental implants
A dental implant is a titanium or zirconia post placed in the jaw to hold a crown, bridge or denture. Treatment usually takes a few months from placement to the final tooth.
What changes the price

- Crown typePorcelain-fused-to-metal, full ceramic or zirconia.
- Scans and extractionA 3D CBCT scan and removing the old tooth are often billed separately.
- Who places itAn oral surgeon or periodontist may charge more than a general dentist.

SHA and insurance
SHA cover for dental implants depends on the benefit package and whether the facility is contracted for it. Ask the facility's SHA desk to confirm, and start pre-authorisation early for planned treatment.
Common questions
How long does a dental implant take?
Most cases take a few months between placing the implant and fitting the final crown, to let the bone heal around it.
Can I pay in instalments?
Many private dental clinics offer payment plans spread across the treatment stages. Ask when you request a quote.
Are cheap implants safe?
Ask which implant brand is used and whether parts will be available in future. A registered dentist and a known system matter more than the lowest price.
Implant or bridge: which lasts longer?
Well-cared-for implants usually last longer than bridges and do not need the neighbouring teeth to be filed down.
Getting dental implants in Kenya
Dental implants are placed by private dental clinics, specialist oral surgeons and some hospital dental units. Most clinics are in Nairobi, with others in Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret. Treatment usually takes a few months from placing the implant to fitting the final crown, so expect several visits.
How to keep the cost down
- Ask for an itemised quote that lists the implant, abutment, crown, scans and any bone graft separately.
- Ask about payment in stages: many clinics split the cost across the treatment steps.
- Compare an implant with a bridge or partial denture if budget is the main concern.
- Choose a known implant system; spare parts and repairs are easier later.
Questions to ask before you pay
- Which implant brand do you use?
- Is the crown included, and what is it made of?
- Will I need a bone graft, and what does it cost?
- How many visits will it take?
